Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS), formed by major corporate partners Fluor Daniel; Northrop Grumman; and Honeywell, will be the new Management & Operating Contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS) beginning August 1, 2008.
Dr. Sam Bhattacharyya will serve as director of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) for SRNS. In this position, he is responsible for the management, operations, and planned growth of the laboratory.
Bhattacharyya's technical credentials include a 29-year career at the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). He has achieved international recognition for his technical work in advanced nuclear power systems for terrestrial and space applications, and has been published widely and participated in national and international conferences.
Bhattacharyya has been active in all aspects of nuclear technology, including 19 years in executive leadership positions at ANL, culminating in a five-year term as director of the Technology Development Division. The division was a diversified organization with several technical programs, including advanced reactors, nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear fusion, and fuel cycle assessments; all of which presented complex management challenges. After leaving ANL, Bhattacharyya created his own technical and management services company, RENMAR Enterprises, Inc., which has a broad portfolio of private-sector and government clients.
Bhattacharyya is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and has served on several Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration advisory boards. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian institute of Technology in Kharagpur, India. He also earned a master's degree and doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin, as well as a master's in business administration from the University of Chicago. He is a registered professional engineer.
