Mr. Ostendorff was confirmed by the Senate in March 2007 to serve as the Deputy Administrator and Chief Operating Officer of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), of the U.S. Department of Energy. He joined the NNSA on April 9, 2007 and was sworn in by Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman.
Previously, he served as Counsel and Staff Director for the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. This subcommittee has oversight responsibilities for the Department of Energy's Atomic Energy Defense Activities, as well as for the Department of Defense's space, missile defense, and intelligence programs.
A native of Shreveport, Mr. Ostendorff graduated from the United States Naval Academy with Merit in 1976, with a B.S. in Systems Engineering. He received a J.D. from the University of Texas and an LL.M. with Distinction in International and Comparative Law from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas. Bill and his wife reside in Oakton, Virginia, and have three children.
