"South Carolina's Important Role in National Security and Nuclear Nonproliferation"
Jerry Paul was sworn in as the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) first Principal Deputy Administrator in 2004. Recently, he was appointed by President Bush to act as well as the Acting Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.
The Principal Deputy Administrator assists Administrator Linton F. Brooks in overseeing all NNSA headquarters organizations and provides leadership and direction for all NNSA site office activities. He serves as the agency's chief operating officer.
As NNSA's Acting Deputy Director for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, Mr. Paul has the responsibility of preventing the spread of materials, technology, and expertise relating to weapons of mass destruction, and for eliminating inventories of surplus fissile materials.
Mr. Paul, a nuclear engineer and attorney, represented the 71st district in the Florida House of Representatives. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1989 to 1996 as a Commissioned Special Duty Engineering Reserve Officer. He has worked as a reactor engineer and power plant operator at fossil and nuclear power plants. Mr. Paul holds a law degree from Stetson University, a bachelor's degree in marine engineering from the Merchant Marine Academy, and a post-baccalaureate degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Florida.
